The Practitioners of Musick have acquired a rare volume - part of the personal music collection assembled by James Calvert of Baltimore.

This a bound collection of music all published in London from the years 1790 through 1814. Among the publishers ~ Corri; Hall & Co.; H. Andrews; Goulding, Phipps & D'Almaine; and Michael Kelly who was also a celebrated singer and friend of Mozart. The Kelly compositions bear his stamped monogram.

The composers represented include Mr. Handel; Dr. Arne; Storace; Dibdin; Dussek; and Kelly amongst others. Mozart is represented with a setting of an "AIR" with variations as published in Pleyel,Corri and Dussek's Musical Journal - No. 3 - January 24th. 1797. The collection also includes John Christian Bach's setting of "God Save the King" for Harpsichord or Piano-Forte.

Approximately 300 pages folio sized, the volume measures 13.5 " by 9.5" with original though quite worn 3/4 calf binding. On the front paste-down end paper is the early 19th century engraved armorial book plate of James Calvert bearing the text "Fatte Maschi Parole Femine" commonly translated from the Italian as "Manly deeds, womanly words". The saying is the motto of the Calvert family [the Barons Baltimore] who founded the colony of Maryland. Thus this volume is a remarkable record of musical taste in early Federal period Baltimore.
